Hydration Factors

What affects your water needs

Heat & Humidity

Causes more sweat, requiring more replacement fluid.

Physical Activity

Significant loss through exercise should be replaced 1:1.

Body Weight

Larger bodies generally require more water to function.

Altitude

High altitudes can lead to increased fluid loss through breath.

Why Hydration is Crucial

Water accounts for about 60% of your body weight and is involved in every major system. It regulates body temperature, keeps joints lubricated, prevents infections, delivers nutrients to cells, and keeps organs functioning properly. Even mild dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, and decreased cognitive performance.

The "Urine Test"

While calculators provide a great starting point, the most accurate way to check your hydration is by observing the color of your urine.

Hydration FAQs

Does coffee count towards my water intake?

Yes. While caffeine has a mild diuretic effect, the water in coffee and tea still contributes to your daily hydration goal.

Can I drink too much water?

Yes, though it's rare. Hyponatremia occurs when you drink so much water that your kidneys can't keep up, causing sodium levels in your blood to drop dangerously low. This usually only happens during extreme endurance events.

Do I need more water if I'm pregnant?

Yes. Pregnant and breastfeeding women generally require significantly more water (about 0.7L to 1L extra per day) to support fetal development and milk production.

Medical Disclaimer

These recommendations are based on general health guidelines. People with certain medical conditions like heart failure or kidney disease may need to restrict their fluid intake. Always consult your doctor for personalized medical advice.
